Marketplace Ministries: MM NURSE EDUCATOR

Marketplace Ministries is looking for a Nursing Educator to serve in North Africa.

Position Type

The nurse educator will teach in a two-year nursing program connected with a small Christian hospital in North Africa. Our vision is to create nurses who are competent and compassionate in their care, treating the body, soul, and spirit. The program is modeled after a two-year ADN program, with courses in pathophysiology, pharmacology, fundamentals, and specialty fields. The educator will teach in a classroom setting, as well as in simulation, labs, and clinicals. Opportunity is available to teach in the hospital to nurses not enrolled in the program in specialty areas. While education is a primary focus, there are many opportunities for discipleship in and out of the program.

General Information

Our city is a rural area 40 miles northwest of the capital. The area is 99% Muslim believers, with most Christians from the Coptic faith. We are currently on tourist visas. We work alongside other believers at the hospital, many who have come from other parts of the country to serve the people of the area surrounding the hospital. The hospital is affiliated with the Anglican church, and there is an Anglican church on the premises. This is the only Protestant church in the city. There have been some incidences of violence toward Coptic Christians over the past decade, but most people in the area are very welcoming to foreigners in their city. While there are no amenities like malls, cinemas, or chain restaurants, shopping for food and eating at small local restaurants is very easy and convenient. There is no danger to oneself when walking around town or taking public transportation.

Language Expectations

Language is an essential part of ministry. The successful applicant(s) will receive one year of intense language study, followed by ongoing language and cultural acquisition. The goal is to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level in order to mentor, teach, and train others.

Intensive language study is done in the capital for 3-6 months, and then language learning is continued with a combination of language helpers and formal language lessons in the small city itself.

Health Considerations

While we do live and work in a hospital, many tertiary services and treatments are only available in the capital.

Expectations for Spouse

Spousal roles vary, based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children, etc.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options

As the IW will be on a tourist visa, children will be unable to attend an English-speaking school in the country itself. If the child is young, he/she may attend a local Christian school or nursery, but plans should be made for older children to homeschool or go to a boarding school outside of the country.

Compensation

The successful applicant(s) will need to have adequate support through one of the following ways: Entirely through income received from secular employment. Entirely through contributions received from churches, individuals, and/or participating agencies. Partially through secular employment and partially through contributions.

Important Clarification:

Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process.
