Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. International workers will receive one year of intensive Indonesian, followed by further tutoring if needed for the second year. It is expected that during the first year in Bandung several hours per day will be dedicated to language acquisition. The goal will be to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level to mentor, teach, and train others. The goal of mastering the Indonesian language is a life-long process that will greatly enhance the appointee’s ministry and ability to reach people in Bandung for Christ.

Health Considerations:

Bandung has many pharmacies with a good selection of medications, but outside medical consultations for prescriptions are necessary for anything beyond basic care. The hospitals provide an inconsistent quality of care. Better care is available in the capital, but it still does not meet international standards, depending on the medical issue. International quality care is available in Malaysia and Singapore, which are accessible by direct flight from Bandung.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children, etc. Spouses are considered equal partners on the team and must share a clear calling to cross-cultural ministry. The couple will be expected to be involved in hospitality, personal witness, discipleship, and mentoring.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Local schools with classes taught in Indonesian are available in the town, and bilingual options are offered for lower grade levels. Junior and senior high-school-age children can attend Dalat International School, a boarding school in Penang, Malaysia. Homeschooling is also an option for all grade levels. International school options are not viable due to their distance from the ministry center.
