The successful applicant(s) will join a growing, multi-cultural team that engages with the majority culture through business development, agriculture, and other innovative community development projects. This is a team that highly values contextualization while bringing Jesus’ presence into every aspect of community life.

Responsibilities:

• Live in a community of the majority faith to build relationships that lead to demonstration and proclamation of the gospel
• Develop/join the team in forming a social foundation or social enterprise

Required Qualifications:

• A recognized bachelor’s degree
• Completion of World Perspectives Mission Course or other comparable mission course
• Completion of Alliance Polity course
• A minimum Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) score of 50 or higher
• Adaptability and comfort with uncertainty

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree and/or experience in holistic community development (business, water projects, agriculture, income generation, etc.)
• Some pastoral experience 

Biblical Characteristics:

• Ability to articulate personal conversion and call to ministry
• Ability to communicate the gospel to a seeker
• Demonstrated heart for the poor and marginalized (Micah 6:8)
• Theological alignment with The Alliance
• Demonstrated flexibility and grace in all aspects of life
• Ability to learn and recover from failure
• Vibrant spiritual life and consistent disciplines

Timeline for deployment:

Summer 2022. Once appointed and fundraising and other qualifications are met, the appointee is required to attend a cross-cultural and language acquisition program and Pre-Field Orientation prior to deploying.

This beautiful tropical island is home to 3.8 million people, with less than 200 known baptized believers. It is known for its beaches, a volcanic mountain, and thousands of houses of worship. The people rely primarily on fishing, agriculture, and tourism for their livelihood. They are devout people with increasing openness due to tourism and development and the effect of a recent massive earthquake.

The successful applicant(s) will live in a medium-sized urban setting with some western-style amenities. The city is surrounded by rice paddies, and it’s only a short drive to world-class beaches, hidden waterfalls, and mountainous hiking trails. Several times each month the team fellowships with international workers from other organizations as no international church exists. 

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. For those who do not know the language, one year of intensive language study is required through the local university and supplemented with language tutors.

Health Considerations:

There are limited health resources on this island. Some medications will need to be brought from the States. Serious health issues are usually handled in Malaysia or Singapore.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children’s needs, etc.

Children’s Educational Options:

A local international school using the Cambridge international curriculum through grade 10 is an option. Homeschooling is also an option.
